The epitome of all
our efforts in working with projects related to the Information
Communication Technology (ICT) sector has been the setting up
of the Resource Centre, to serve the Visually Challenged, as a
part of the activities of the Society For the Rehabilitation Of The Visually
Challenged based in Kochi, Kerala, India. This has been the
fruit of Sunil's
association with the Society for the Rehabilitation of the
Visually Challenged (www.visuallychallenged.com)
and VidyaVrikshah (www.vidyavrikshah.org)
a NGO based in Chennai - towards the establishment of a centre
which houses "blind
friendly" computers and a speech-audio software (developed
by Dr.
Kalyanakrishnan and his team at I.I.T. Chennai). This will aid the visually challenged gain computer literacy and bring
about job
proficiencies in the Information Technology field.
This is
to be the cornerstone from where Yojna.org is to work on
establishing
similar models throughout the region and help encourage similar initiatives
elsewhere. Initial training is offered to around 30 students, the
strength to be increased as more computers are to be added
to the present infrastructure.
Focus is two pronged
- Education and bringing about Economic
Rehabilitation for this section of society.
Objectives :
-
Computer
training programmes with practice facility
-
Setting of a Braille Library
-
Printouts through
Braille Output printers - printing books for educational purposes
etc.
-
Help in
providing training for job- related work in data entry,

| Disability
- Blind (Visual) : Statistics "Blindness
represents a serious public health, social and
economic problem for our Member States. It is
especially true for the developing countries, where 9
out of 10 of the world's blind live," stated Dr
Gro Harlem Brundtland, Director-General of WHO.
"Up to 80% of global blindness is avoidable: it
either results from the conditions that could have
been prevented or can be successfully treated with the
sight restored," she said.
Today, there is an estimated 180
million people worldwide who are visually disabled. Of
these, between 40 and 45 million persons are blind and,
by definition, cannot walk about unaided. Around 60% of
the world's blind reside in sub-Saharan Africa, China
and India.
